AlPower is based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the heart of the emerging southern U.S. hydrogen energy Hub. Our Team is passionate about ensuring that healthy people benefit from a green planet for many years to come. We have brought together a dedicated and creative team of scientists and engineers to create sustainable food and fuel solutions that support our environment and empower our partners. Our Team has developed proprietary technologies to convert cheap inputs, sunlight and carbon dioxide, into green, resilient high-value products. AlPower’s patented technologies have no dependence on crop land or unstable prices of electricity and natural gas.

Our scientists have employed innovation in the areas of metabolic engineering, plant breeding and algal culture to solve challenges of green fuel scarcity, growing world population, and climate change. AlPower’s efforts were recognized by the U.S. National Sciences Foundation (NSF). In 2020 NSF awarded AlPower a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant which greatly facilitated development of the novel green hydrogen production technology (link to summary on NSF page).

I have always loved animals. When I turned 11, I discovered I could not fish. My Dad helped me catch my first fish, but when I watched them struggling to breathe, I couldn’t kill it and made my father release all fish we caught. I never fished again after that. This was my passive protest. When I grew up my love to animals turned into passions for healthy planet and people. As a Professor at LSU, I discovered that algae can produce hydrogen, the cleanest fuel on Earth. It even uses up carbon dioxide in the process! This is why I became so excited about hydrogen making algae. I still continued to eat fish despite my love of wild life. It’s so healthy! But what if we could eat healthy and not kill animals? Today, we can! Algae have high quality protein and omega-3 oils which is much healthier than sourcing these from soybeans, peas or meats. Another bonus. Our algae have fewer heavy metals even than Chlorella and Spirulina, – the popular healthy algae. (Fish is notorious for accumulating heavy metals). So, our protein source can help to expend a healthy lifespan. Algae can produce 10 times more protein per acre compared to soybean production and 100 times more protein per acre that cattle or pig farming for meat. With AlPower’s alternative protein, we could return so much land back and restore wild life for future generations to enjoy.   • August 2020, AlPower was awarded an NSF Small Business Innovation Research grant to develop advanced algal strains for hydrogen production.
  • February 2022, AlPower was awarded an NSF Technology Enhancement for Commercial Partnerships grant to identify commercially viable value-added products in algal biomass.
